Día de los Muertos (a.k.a. “Day of the Dead”) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd to honor friends and family members who have died.
More joyful than solemn, this annual celebration is not solely focused on remembering the dead. It is common to give gifts such as candy sugar skulls, share traditional pan de muerto with family and friends and to write light-hearted and often irreverent verses in the form of mock epitaphs dedicated to living friends and acquaintances (known as calaveras literarias).
